For years, the answer to "Is there ZoomIt for Mac?" was no. Mark Russinovich's ZoomIt has been a go-to presentation tool on Windows for about two decades: press a hotkey, zoom into the code or setting you're talking about, draw an arrow on it, and get back to your demo.

That changed in July 2026. Microsoft released Sysinternals ZoomIt for Mac, a free, open-source (MIT) menu bar app with the same hotkeys, now on the Mac App Store and Homebrew. So the question has shifted: is the official port the best tool for your Mac demos, or does another app suit the way you present?

This guide compares ZoomIt for Mac with Presentify, DemoPro, CleanShot X and the tools already built into macOS.

Quick Verdict

Choose ZoomIt for Mac if you want the familiar Windows hotkeys, a free price, and zoom, drawing, snips, OCR, a break timer and screen recording in one app.

Choose Presentify if you also need a cursor highlight with click animations, a spotlight, a visible (but hideable) control panel, and a way to click through to your apps while annotations stay on screen.

Choose DemoPro if you want the cheapest paid option, no toolbar on screen, a press-and-hold workflow, Apple Pencil pressure, and an app that never asks for Screen Recording permission.

Choose CleanShot X if what you really used ZoomIt for was snipping, OCR and recording, and you want more polished screenshots and videos rather than live annotation.

Use the built-in macOS tools if you only need to zoom now and then, and don't want to install anything.

ZoomIt for Mac: The Benchmark

ZoomIt for Mac is the official Sysinternals port, built natively in Swift rather than wrapped from the Windows code. It lives in the menu bar, stays out of sight until you press a hotkey, and uses the same numbering Windows users know: Control-1 to zoom, Control-2 to draw without zooming, Control-3 for the break timer, Control-4 for live zoom, Control-5 to record, Control-6 to snip, and Control-8 for a scrolling panorama capture.

Zoom and draw: static zoom freezes the screen so you can magnify and draw on it; live zoom magnifies the running screen and lets you keep clicking. Drawing works the way it does on Windows: hold Shift for a line, Control for a rectangle, Tab for an ellipse, Control-Shift for an arrow, press a letter to change color, add Shift for highlighter ink, and press T to type. Whiteboard and blackboard sketch pads cover the screen when you need a blank page.

Beyond presenting: you can snip a region to the clipboard or a file, copy text from any region with on-device OCR (Control-Option-6), and stitch a scrolling area into one long image. Recording saves MP4 with optional system audio, microphone and a fixed webcam bubble, then opens a small editor to trim, append, fade and mute the clip before saving.

Limits: ZoomIt for Mac needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later and Screen Recording permission. The Mac App Store build is sandboxed and leaves out DemoType (ZoomIt's scripted typing feature); the Homebrew build includes it. There's no persistent cursor highlight or spotlight listed, and the drawing tools are deliberately basic, with hotkeys rather than a toolbar. The app is also young: the first Mac release shipped in July 2026, and it is still changing quickly.

Stay with ZoomIt if you switch between Windows and Mac and want one set of muscle memory on both, or if a free all-in-one tool covers your demos.

Presentify

Presentify is a menu bar app built for live presenting: annotating over slides, video calls and apps, and keeping your audience's eyes where you want them. Press ⌃A to annotate over any app, including Keynote in presentation mode, PowerPoint, Zoom, Google Meet and OBS.

Where it goes beyond ZoomIt: a cursor highlight (⌃S) with ring, squircle or rhombus shapes and separate left- and right-click animations, plus a spotlight (⌃L) that dims everything outside a circle, rectangle or squircle around your pointer. These help on a call, where viewers can't see where you're pointing. Presentify also has a zoom view (⌃Z) that follows the cursor or magnifies the full screen.

Annotation: free hand, arrows, rectangles, circles and text, a highlighter that marks text without hiding it, filled shapes with Option, gradient colors, Auto-Erase, and a whiteboard (W). Single-key shortcuts pick tools and your five favorite colors, and S saves a screenshot of your annotations.

Workflow: a small control panel shows your tools, and you can move it or hide it. Hold Fn to click through to the app underneath without clearing your drawings, or start in Interactive Mode so Presentify stays in the background until you hold Fn. Nearly every action has a customizable shortcut, which makes it easy to drive from a Stream Deck.

Limits: no break timer, no OCR, no scrolling capture and no screen recording; pair it with the macOS screenshot tool or a recorder. It costs $14.99 on the Mac App Store, or comes with a Setapp subscription, which has a 7-day free trial.

Choose Presentify if your demos happen live, on calls or in classrooms, and pointing clearly matters as much as zooming.

DemoPro

DemoPro is built on the idea that your audience should never see the tool. There's no toolbar while you annotate: you press a hotkey for the tool or color you want and start drawing, and release it to get back to your app.

Annotation and cursor: freehand, line, arrow, rectangle, ellipse and text tools, five color presets, and Auto-Fade, which makes drawings disappear like invisible ink. You can hold the hotkey to draw or toggle annotation on and off. A cursor highlight offers Ring, Disc, Laser Pointer and Spotlight styles, with an optional ripple on each click.

Board mode and break timer: like ZoomIt, DemoPro has a break timer, with your own message, an optional chime, and a compact menu bar pill while it's minimized. Board mode covers the screen with a whiteboard or blackboard. The October 2026 update keeps annotations available on every Space, including other apps' full-screen Spaces, on multi-display setups.

iPad and privacy: with Sidecar you can draw with an Apple Pencil, with optional pen pressure. DemoPro doesn't ask for Screen Recording permission, which is also why it has no zoom or screenshot feature of its own; it links to the macOS tools instead.

Limits: no zoom, no OCR and no recording, and it needs macOS 15 Sequoia or later. It costs $3.99 on the Mac App Store.

Choose DemoPro if you want ZoomIt's draw-and-timer workflow without any visible interface, and you're happy to use the macOS zoom.

CleanShot X

CleanShot X isn't a live presentation tool, but many people used ZoomIt mostly for its snip, OCR and recording shortcuts. If that's you, CleanShot does those jobs in more depth.

Captures: area, window and full-screen screenshots, a self-timer, and scrolling capture for long chats, documents, code or webpages. On-device text recognition copies text (and QR codes) from any region. A full markup editor adds arrows, text, highlights, blur and redaction, spotlight and numbered counters, and you can pin a capture on top of other windows.

Recording: MP4 or GIF recordings with a camera bubble, click highlights, keystroke display, and microphone and system audio. Studio Mode adds Smart Zooms, cursor smoothing and motion blur after you record, which is ZoomIt's zoom idea applied to edited videos rather than live demos.

Limits: CleanShot doesn't draw over your live screen, so it can't replace ZoomIt or Presentify on a call or in a meeting room. CleanShot Basic is $35 one-time with a year of updates (optional renewal at $19 a year); CleanShot Pro adds unlimited cloud storage and team features from $10 per user per month, billed annually. It's also on Setapp. For more on its recording side, see CleanShot X vs Shotbase.

Choose CleanShot X if you record walkthroughs and grab screenshots all day, and live annotation is a smaller part of your work.

The Built-in macOS Tools

You may not need an app at all for occasional zooming. Turn on Zoom in System Settings > Accessibility, then enable keyboard shortcuts: Option-Command-8 toggles zoom, and Option-Command-Plus and Option-Command-Minus zoom in and out. You can also zoom with a scroll gesture while holding Control, Option or Command, and choose a Full Screen, Split Screen or Picture-in-Picture zoom style.

For the rest, Shift-Command-5 opens the Screenshot toolbar for screenshots and screen recordings, Live Text copies text from images, and Markup in Preview handles quick arrows and highlights. What macOS lacks is drawing over the live screen, a whiteboard and a break timer.

Showing Keystrokes Too

ZoomIt's DemoType types pre-written snippets for you, but it doesn't show the shortcuts you press. If your demos rely on keyboard shortcuts, KeyScreen displays your keystrokes and mouse clicks on screen, with themes and a choice of which keys to show. It works alongside any of the apps above; see the best way to show keystrokes on Mac for other options.

Choose ZoomIt for Mac if…

  • You already know ZoomIt's hotkeys from Windows and want the same workflow on your Mac.
  • You want zoom, drawing, snips, OCR, a break timer and recording in one free app.
  • You're on macOS 14 or later and don't need a cursor highlight.

Choose Presentify if…

  • You present on video calls or in classrooms and need a cursor highlight, click animations or a spotlight.
  • You want to keep annotations on screen while you click and type in your apps.
  • You like a visible control panel, a highlighter, filled shapes or gradient colors.
  • You're on macOS 13 Ventura, or want to try it first through Setapp.

Choose DemoPro if…

  • You want a toolbar-free, press-and-hold annotation workflow for a few dollars.
  • You run workshops and want a break timer next to your annotation tools.
  • You'd rather not grant Screen Recording permission to an annotation app.

Choose CleanShot X if…

  • You mainly used ZoomIt to snip, copy text and record, not to present live.
  • You want scrolling capture, redaction and edited recordings with smart zooms.

Final Verdict

The official ZoomIt for Mac is the obvious first stop now: it's free, it has the hotkeys Windows users already know, and it covers zoom, drawing, snips, OCR, a break timer and recording. For many technical presenters, that's enough.

The alternatives win in specific places. Presentify is the better fit for live presenting on calls and in classes, where a cursor highlight, spotlight and click-through annotation keep people following along. DemoPro is the cheapest way to get clean, toolbar-free drawing and a break timer. CleanShot X is the stronger tool if your "ZoomIt" use was really screenshots and recordings. And for zooming once in a while, macOS already has you covered.
