BoltAI is a native macOS AI app that puts OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, Azure, Bedrock, xAI, Perplexity, and local models behind one window and one keyboard shortcut. You bring your own API keys, pay once for the app, and stop juggling browser tabs.

I have covered BoltAI before in our macOS AI clients comparison and our ChatGPT alternatives roundup, but it has changed enough since v2 shipped that it deserves a post of its own. This review covers what BoltAI does well, where it falls short, what it costs, and who should actually buy it.

Quick Verdict

Buy BoltAI if you already pay for API access, want AI available systemwide on macOS, and prefer a one-time license over another monthly subscription. It is fastest for people who use more than one model provider and want to switch between them without changing apps.

Skip it if you want a zero-setup assistant with usage included. BoltAI does not bundle tokens. If you have never touched an API key and do not want to, the official ChatGPT or Claude apps are a simpler starting point.

What BoltAI Actually Does

One app for every provider

The core pitch is consolidation. Instead of a ChatGPT tab, a Claude tab, a Gemini tab, and a terminal running Ollama, you configure API keys once and switch models from a dropdown mid-conversation. BoltAI currently advertises access to 300+ models.

This matters more than it sounds. Model strengths diverge, and being able to re-run the same prompt against a different model without copying text between apps changes how you work. Fork a chat, switch the model, and compare the two branches side by side.

Systemwide access, not just a chat window

BoltAI's better trick is that it does not need to be the app you are looking at. A global shortcut opens an instant chat over whatever is on screen. ShotSolve lets you capture part of your screen and get an explanation, a fix, or a summary back. Instant Dictation gives you push-to-talk input, and AI Workflows apply one-click transforms to selected text in place.

The 2.14.0 release specifically improved AI Workflows so formatting survives in rich-text apps like Notes, Obsidian, and Mail, which was a real annoyance before.

Power tools that earn the "workspace" label

Projects and folders, reusable AI agents with their own instructions and knowledge, context profiles you switch between for coding versus writing, a prompt library, memory, temporary chats that skip history, full-text search across every conversation, and fine-grained control over temperature, max tokens, top-p/top-k, and penalties.

There is also MCP support. You can point BoltAI at local and remote MCP servers using a ~/.boltai/mcp.json file that mirrors the format other MCP clients use, and toggle tools per agent. Combined with code execution and Claude Skills for parsing Office documents and PDFs, BoltAI covers a lot of what people currently script by hand.

Local models and privacy

Chats are stored locally. API keys can be encrypted behind a passphrase. Nothing is used for training. If you want to go further, Ollama and LM Studio support means you can run models entirely on your own hardware with no per-token cost and no network round trip.

That combination is the reason BoltAI shows up in workplaces with strict data rules. It is worth checking your own policy rather than taking a marketing page at face value, but the architecture is friendlier to that conversation than a hosted assistant.

Sync and mobile

BoltAI Cloud syncs chats, agents, and projects to iPhone and iPad. The mobile app is still in beta, and cloud storage is quota-based: 512MB on Essential, 1GB on Pro, 10GB shared on Team. Version 2.14.0 also added full local backup and restore with archive validation, which is a sensible addition for an app that keeps your data on your own machine.

Pricing: The Part Worth Reading Carefully

BoltAI is a perpetual license with one year of updates. After that year, you keep the last version you have, but new features, Cloud Sync, and mobile access require a renewal. Renewal is optional and currently discounted (BoltAI's pricing page cites roughly 40% off).

Two things to note. First, Essential is deliberately limited: it lacks instant chat, dictation, projects, fork chats, vision, image generation, document Q&A, agents, workflows, prompt library, memory, web search, code execution, and MCP tools. Most of the reasons to buy BoltAI live in Pro. Second, the promotional pricing above is tied to the Indie App Sales 2026 promotion, which was showing under a day remaining when I checked. Verify the price on the pricing page before you buy.

The tokens are not included. Budget separately for API usage, or lean on local models via Ollama to avoid it entirely.

Where BoltAI Falls Short

Setup is not zero-effort. You need API keys from at least one provider, and you need to understand that spending is metered per token. This is the single biggest reason to skip BoltAI.

Essential is too thin. At $79 list, the entry tier is missing enough that most buyers will feel pushed to Pro. Clearer naming would help.

The renewal model needs attention. "Pay once" is true for the app binary, but Cloud Sync and mobile access stop when the update window lapses. That is a subscription with extra steps for anyone who relies on sync.

Mobile is still beta. If cross-device parity is the reason you are buying, wait.

Cost math is not automatic for light users. If you send a handful of prompts a week, ChatGPT's free tier or a $20/month plan is cheaper and simpler. BoltAI pays off for heavy, multi-model, multi-context work.

How It Compares

Against TypingMind, the closest competitor, the split is native versus web. TypingMind is a polished bring-your-own-key workspace that runs anywhere; BoltAI is a real Mac app with global shortcuts, screenshot capture, and inline editing across other applications. If you live in a browser, TypingMind is fine. If you want AI available in Xcode, Mail, and Notes, BoltAI wins.

Against the official ChatGPT and Claude apps, BoltAI trades convenience for control. Those apps include usage, require no keys, and get first-party features first. BoltAI gives you provider choice, local storage, local models, and no monthly bill for the software itself.

Against LM Studio, it is not really a contest: LM Studio is a local model runtime, and BoltAI can drive it. Use both.

Who Should Buy BoltAI

Buy it if you are a developer, writer, researcher, or consultant who already uses API keys, works across more than one model, and wants AI reachable from any app with a keystroke. The Pro tier at promotional pricing is a straightforward win against a year of subscription fees.

Buy it if your data cannot leave your machine and you need local model support with a real interface on top.

Do not buy it if you want a single assistant with usage included, if you only use one model, or if your monthly AI usage is light enough that a hosted plan is simpler and cheaper.

Final Verdict

BoltAI is the most complete native AI client on macOS right now. The systemwide shortcuts, MCP support, agents, local model support, and local-first storage add up to something more useful than another chat window, and the one-time license is a genuine relief in a category that has gone subscription-crazy.

The caveats are real: bring-your-own-key setup, a thin entry tier, and a renewal requirement for sync. None of them are dealbreakers if you fit the profile, and the 30-day money-back guarantee plus a no-account free trial means you can find out cheaply.
