Cap vs Screen Studio: Is Cap the Best Free Alternative to Screen Studio?
Screen Studio is the Mac app people reach for when they want screen recordings that look professionally edited without doing the editing: automatic zooms, smooth cursor movement, and polished backgrounds. It's also now subscription-only. Cap is the open-source app most often suggested as the free alternative, and it has caught up a lot since we first compared them.
There's one catch to the "free" label: Cap's free version is for personal use only. If you record videos for work, Cap's commercial Desktop License or Cap Pro is the fair comparison. Here's how the two stack up in October 2026.
Quick Verdict
- Choose Screen Studio if you're on a Mac and want the most polished, automatic results, including camera layouts, transcript-based editing, voice cleanup, and iPhone recording.
- Choose Cap if you want an open-source recorder that also runs on Windows and Linux, you're recording for personal use (free), or you want a one-time commercial license instead of a subscription.

Screen Studio: Polish With Almost No Effort
Screen Studio records your screen and cursor separately, so it can rebuild cursor movement afterwards. That's what makes its recordings look smooth: shaky movement becomes a steady glide, clicks get a subtle ripple, fast moves pick up motion blur, and you can change the cursor's size after recording. Zooms are added automatically where you clicked, or you can drop your own on the timeline.
Version 4.0 added more of the work a video editor would do:
- Transcript editing: delete a sentence in the transcript to cut it from the video, and remove filler words and long pauses in one pass.
- Camera layouts: switch between fullscreen camera, split screen, overlay, and screen-only in one recording, with background removal and face tracking done on your Mac.
- Voice cleanup: on-device noise reduction and a Podcast mode (beta).
- Any aspect ratio: one recording becomes wide, square, and vertical versions, and Reel mode previews Instagram or TikTok overlays.
- iPhone and iPad recording: plug in over USB and Screen Studio frames the recording in the right device mockup.
Sharing is built in too: shareable links in 1080p at 60 fps for videos up to 30 minutes, with timestamped comments, plus MP4 export up to 4K at 60 fps and GIFs up to 1080p.
Pricing: every feature is in every plan. It costs $9/month billed yearly or $29/month billed monthly, and students and educators get 40% off. One-time licenses are no longer available for new purchases; older licenses stay valid and can be renewed for updates. Screen Studio is Mac-only and the developers say there are no near-future plans for Windows.
Cap: Open Source and Cross-Platform
Cap started as an open-source Loom alternative and has grown into a capable Screen Studio rival. It has three modes:
- Instant Mode streams to the cloud while you record, so a share link is ready when you stop.
- Studio Mode records locally in 4K at 60 fps with separate screen, camera, and mic tracks, then opens an editor with automatic zoom from your clicks, cursor smoothing, click effects, motion blur, backgrounds, camera scenes, text, and blur masks for passwords or emails.
- Screenshot Mode captures and styles screenshots.
Captions are generated on your machine in 19 languages, and you can edit and style them before burning them in. Cap runs on macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows (beta), and Linux, with a Chrome extension for browser recording. Because it's open source, you can also self-host it or point it at your own storage.
Pricing is where the "free" label needs care. Cap's pricing has three tiers:
- Free: personal use only, Studio Mode included, and share links up to 5 minutes.
- Desktop License: $29 per year or $58 once for commercial use of the desktop app, with local recording and editing and 20 share links a month (up to 5 minutes each).
- Cap Pro: $12 per user per month, or $8.16/month billed annually, adding unlimited cloud sharing, AI titles, summaries, chapters, and transcriptions, a custom domain, password-protected links, viewer analytics, a Loom importer, and custom S3 or Google Drive storage.
Downsides: Cap's editor is less automatic than Screen Studio's. It doesn't list transcript-based editing, voice cleanup, keyboard shortcut overlays, or iPhone recording, and the Windows version is still in beta.
Which One Is Right for You?
Choose Screen Studio if:
- You record on a Mac and want polished demos with the least editing.
- You need camera layouts, background removal, voice cleanup, or transcript editing.
- You record iPhone or iPad apps.
- A subscription fits your budget, or the work justifies it.
Choose Cap if:
- You record for personal use and want a free, capable recorder.
- You need Windows or Linux support, or want open-source software you can self-host.
- You'd rather pay once: the $58 lifetime Desktop License covers commercial use.
- You want Loom-style instant links with AI summaries and chapters (Cap Pro).

Final Verdict
Screen Studio is still the most polished way to make Mac screen recordings look professional, and version 4.0 widened the gap with camera layouts, transcript editing, and voice cleanup. The trade-off is a subscription with no one-time option.
Cap is the best free alternative for personal recordings, and for business use it's the best low-cost one: a $58 lifetime Desktop License costs less than one year of Screen Studio billed yearly ($108). You'll do a bit more manual editing, but you get cross-platform support and open-source code in return.
