Superwhisper is one of the most capable AI dictation apps: local and cloud models, AI modes for messages and email, meeting recording, file transcription, and translation, on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android. It also has a lot of settings, and its Pro plan is a subscription or a $249.99 lifetime license.

If you want something simpler, cheaper, more focused on transcription, or more polished out of the box, three Mac alternatives stand out: MacWhisper, VoiceInk, and Wispr Flow.

Quick Verdict

  • MacWhisper is the pick if you transcribe files, interviews, and meetings as much as you dictate, and want a one-time Pro license.
  • VoiceInk is the pick if you want local, open-source dictation with AI cleanup on an Apple Silicon Mac for a one-time $25 to $49.
  • Wispr Flow is the pick if you want the most polished "speak naturally, get clean text" experience across Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android, and don't mind cloud processing and a subscription.
  • Stay with Superwhisper if you need translation, meeting notes, and both local and cloud models on every platform.

MacWhisper

MacWhisper, by Jordi Bruin's Good Snooze, is a transcription workbench first. Drag in an interview, lecture, podcast, or video and get an accurate transcript using local models, so sensitive files never leave your Mac. It supports about 100 languages and exports subtitles in .srt and .vtt.

MacWhisper Pro adds the advanced tools: speaker recognition, batch transcription, YouTube and media URLs, transcript and subtitle translation, automatic meeting recording for Zoom, Teams, Webex, and other apps, capturing audio from any app, watched folders, a CLI, and integrations that send transcripts to Notion, Obsidian, Zapier, and more. It also includes higher-quality system-wide dictation with AI prompts per app. You can connect your own API keys for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and others, or use local models through Ollama and LM Studio, and switch between local and cloud-hosted models. Version 11 brought a redesign.

Pricing: the free version covers basic transcription. Pro is €64 one-time with lifetime updates on the developer's Gumroad store (prices vary by region). It's also sold on the Mac App Store, with different pricing.

Downsides: dictation is capable but secondary, it's Mac-only, and the number of features can feel heavy if you only want to talk into Slack.

Choose MacWhisper if file and meeting transcription is at least half of what you need.

VoiceInk

VoiceInk is an open-source Mac dictation app that transcribes on your Mac with local models such as Parakeet and Whisper, then optionally runs the text through AI enhancement to remove filler words, format emails and notes, or rewrite selected text. Only text, not audio, goes to a cloud provider if you enable one.

Its modes switch automatically based on the app or website you're using, a spoken trigger, or a shortcut, and context awareness can use your selected text, clipboard, or on-screen text. It also has a custom dictionary, word replacements, an assistant mode, and transcription for audio and video files. An iOS app is available, free during its beta.

Pricing: $25 for one Mac, $39 for two, or $49 for three, with lifetime updates and a 14-day money-back guarantee. It needs an Apple Silicon Mac with macOS 14.4 or later. The source code is on GitHub under the GPL v3 license.

Downsides: no Windows or Android version, no meeting recorder, and no Intel Mac support.

Choose VoiceInk if you want Superwhisper-style AI dictation on your Mac with local transcription, for a one-time price.

Wispr Flow

Wispr Flow focuses on one thing: turning natural, rambling speech into clean, ready-to-send text in any app. It removes filler words and false starts, learns your names and jargon, supports snippets for text you repeat, and adapts its style to different apps, such as casual for chat and more formal for email. It supports 100+ languages and works on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android. Its Notetaker records and summarizes meetings on Mac and Windows.

Pricing: the free plan includes 2,000 words a week on desktop (1,000 on mobile) and limited Notetaker access. Pro is $15 per user per month, or $12/month billed annually, with unlimited dictation. Wispr Flow is SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certified.

Downsides: it processes speech in the cloud, so it won't work offline; it doesn't list file transcription; and it's subscription-only.

Choose Wispr Flow if you want the least editing after you speak, on every device, and a subscription is fine. For one-time alternatives to it, see our one-time purchase Wispr Flow alternatives.

How to Choose an Alternative

  • Transcribe files, interviews, or meetings often? MacWhisper.
  • Want local, private dictation for a low one-time price? VoiceInk.
  • Want the most polished dictation on every device? Wispr Flow.
  • Need open-source code? VoiceInk.
  • Need Windows support? Wispr Flow (or stay with Superwhisper).
  • On an Intel Mac? VoiceInk needs Apple Silicon, and Superwhisper recommends cloud models on Intel Macs; check the others' system requirements before buying.
  • Need translation into English while dictating? Stay with Superwhisper.

Before paying for anything, try Apple Dictation, which is free and built into macOS. For deeper comparisons, see Superwhisper vs VoiceInk, Wispr Flow vs Superwhisper and Aqua Voice, and MacWhisper alternatives.

Final Verdict

Superwhisper is still the most flexible all-rounder. If it isn't the right fit:

  • MacWhisper is the best alternative for transcription-heavy work, with dictation included in a one-time Pro license.
  • VoiceInk is the best value for Mac-only dictation, with local transcription, AI cleanup, and open-source code from $25.
  • Wispr Flow is the best choice for effortless, cross-device dictation if you accept cloud processing and a subscription.
