Long stretches at a screen are hard on your eyes, neck, and focus, and most of us forget to stop until something hurts. A break reminder app nudges you to look away and step back. Two popular Mac options take very different approaches: Pause, a simple free timer, and LookAway, a smarter paid app that works around your meetings and videos.

Quick Verdict

Choose Pause if you want a free, no-frills break timer with custom work and break lengths and a Flow mode to silence it.

Choose LookAway if you want breaks that avoid interrupting meetings, recordings, and videos, plus posture and blink reminders, deep customization, and iPhone sync, for a one-time price.

Pause

Pause by Harshil Shah does one job simply. You set how often to take a break, how long each break lasts, and what to do during it with custom activity suggestions. Breaks can start only when you click, or begin automatically after a 5-second countdown. When you're in the zone or watching a movie, turn on Flow to stop break notifications. Shortcuts support lets you automate settings changes, and the app is fully localized in Spanish.

What's missing: Pause doesn't detect meetings or videos, so you need to remember Flow mode yourself. There's no break screen customization, no posture or blink nudges, and no iPhone companion.

Pricing and requirements: Pause is free, and the developer says it will always remain free. Get it from the Mac App Store. Note that the developer's website still lists macOS Big Sur, but the current App Store version (2.3.2, June 2025) requires macOS 14.6 or later. It updates less often than LookAway.

LookAway

LookAway by Mystical Bits tries to make breaks less annoying, so you actually keep them on.

  • Smart timing: it waits for a good moment and gives you a heads-up before a break, with +1, +5, and +15 minute snoozes. It pauses automatically during screen recordings, meetings and calls, video playback, deep focus apps, and fullscreen games.
  • Planned Breaks: schedule breaks at fixed times, such as lunch or an afternoon walk, while still respecting meetings and focus.
  • Wellness nudges: posture and blink reminders, separate from full breaks.
  • Customization: calming sounds or your own, custom images, wallpapers, or gradients for the break screen, and personal messages.
  • Automation: run AppleScripts or Shortcuts when a break starts or ends, use Focus Filters, and set global keyboard shortcuts.
  • iPhone and iPad: the free LookAway Mirror app syncs breaks to your iPhone or iPad, so you don't just switch screens. Since version 2.4, break time shows as a Live Activity on the Lock Screen of both the Mac and your paired iPhone or iPad.

The downside: it costs money, and with this many options there's more to set up than with Pause.

Pricing: LookAway is a one-time purchase in USD:

  • Single ($19): 1 Mac, one year of updates
  • Personal ($29): 2 Macs, one year of updates
  • Believer ($99): 5 Macs, lifetime updates

Single and Personal licenses keep working forever. After the first year you can optionally renew updates at a 50% discount ($10 for the first seat and $5 per extra seat on personal licenses). There's a 30% education discount on personal licenses. LookAway is also on the Mac App Store, where pricing differs from the direct version, and included in Setapp. You can also install it with Homebrew (brew install --cask lookaway). Version 2.4.10 requires macOS 13 or later.

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose Pause if you:

  • Want a free break reminder
  • Just need a regular nudge with custom activity suggestions
  • Don't mind turning on Flow yourself before meetings or movies
  • Run macOS 14.6 or later

Choose LookAway if you:

  • Have lots of meetings, calls, or recordings and hate badly timed interruptions
  • Want posture and blink reminders, not just full breaks
  • Want breaks to follow you to your iPhone or iPad
  • Prefer a one-time purchase, or already use Setapp
  • Run macOS 13 or later

Final Verdict

Pause is the best free option if you want a simple break timer and are happy to manage it yourself.

LookAway is the better app overall. Automatic pausing, Planned Breaks, posture and blink reminders, and iPhone sync make it much easier to keep breaks on all day, and the $19 Single license is a fair one-time price.
