Malwarebytes vs Intego vs Bitdefender vs Norton: Best Mac Antivirus in 2026
Macs are harder to infect than they used to be, but they aren't immune. Adware bundled with free downloads, fake app installers, and info-stealers that ask for your password are all aimed at Mac users now, and scam pages don't care which computer you use. That's why a Mac antivirus app still shows up on many shopping lists.
Four names come up most often: Malwarebytes, Mac specialist Intego, Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, and Norton 360. This guide compares what each one adds on a Mac, what it really costs after the first year, and when the protection already built into macOS is enough.
Quick Verdict
Choose Malwarebytes if you want light, simple malware protection with a free scanner to start, and possibly coverage for your phone and a Windows PC on the same plan.
Choose Intego ONE if you only use Apple devices and want a Mac-only suite that adds a two-way firewall and a cleanup tool.
Choose Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac if you want the lowest first-year price and ransomware features aimed at your files and Time Machine backups.
Choose Norton 360 if you want one subscription that bundles antivirus, a VPN, a password manager, and dark web monitoring across several devices, and you're happy to manage renewals.

Malwarebytes
Malwarebytes is the name many Mac users already know from its free cleanup tool. The free version scans for and removes malware, adware, and potentially unwanted programs on demand, which is a sensible first step if your Mac is already showing pop-ups or a browser homepage you didn't set. Real-time protection, which blocks threats before they run and quarantines them automatically, needs a paid plan.
The paid Mac app stays out of the way. Malwarebytes says a scan can take as little as 30 seconds, and the app adds a Protection Score with tips on security gaps. Paid plans also include Browser Guard, a browser extension that blocks scam sites, ads, and third-party trackers, plus data breach notifications.
Pricing is per plan rather than per platform, and the same subscription covers Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android:
- Standard: device security for 3 devices, $59.99/year.
- Plus: adds Privacy VPN (WireGuard-based, no data cap), $79.99/year for 3 devices.
- Ultimate: adds identity protection, $279.99/year.
At the time of writing, Malwarebytes was running a first-year sale through October 11 that cut Standard to $35.99 and Plus to $47.99. Family plans cover 10 devices. There's a 60-day money-back guarantee.
Choose Malwarebytes if you want straightforward protection without a heavy suite, or a free scanner for a one-off cleanup.
Intego ONE
Intego has made Mac security software since 1997, and its products are built for macOS rather than ported from Windows. Its older VirusBarrier and NetBarrier apps are now combined in Intego ONE, which comes in three tiers:
- Essential: real-time antivirus plus a two-way firewall. The antivirus removes viruses, malware, spyware, and adware, with quick or scheduled scans. The firewall monitors network connections and lets you write rules for specific apps.
- Advanced: adds SmartClean, which removes junk files, caches, and app leftovers, fully uninstalls apps, and analyzes storage.
- Complete: adds Intego VPN, and the subscription also covers an iPhone.
Each tier comes in 1-, 3-, or 5-device versions with one- or two-year terms. Intego lists macOS 12.4 or later on Intel or Apple Silicon, with 8 GB of memory minimum. Every plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee.
The firewall is the standout. macOS includes a firewall, but it only controls incoming connections. Intego's per-app rules let you see and block outgoing traffic too, a job otherwise handled by tools like Little Snitch. SmartClean overlaps with Mac cleaner apps, so skip Advanced if you already own one.
Intego's store showed regional pricing. At our EU checkout, Essential for one Mac was €64.99 for two years (25% off the first term), Advanced €109.99, and Complete €129.99, each renewing at those full prices.
Choose Intego if your household is all Apple and you want antivirus and outbound firewall control in one Mac-native app.
Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac
Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac is the Mac edition of a product line that's well known on Windows. It includes real-time protection against viruses and ransomware, adware blocking and removal, and web protection against phishing and malicious sites through a browser extension. Detection is cloud-assisted, so the app itself stays light.
Its ransomware features are the most specific here. Safe Files stops unauthorized apps from changing the folders you choose, and Time Machine Protection guards your backups against ransomware that tries to encrypt them, which matters because a backup is your way out of an attack. Autopilot acts as a security advisor with recommendations based on how you use the Mac.
A VPN is included, but it's capped at 200 MB per day per device, enough for public Wi-Fi checks and not for streaming. Unlimited VPN needs Bitdefender Premium Security, a cross-platform bundle.
Bitdefender's first-year prices were the lowest of the four: $24.99 for 1 Mac or $29.99 for 3 Macs, with two- and three-year options. Subscriptions renew automatically at the renewal price, which Bitdefender says may be higher than what you paid first, so check the amount in your account before renewal. If you also need Windows, Android, or iOS coverage, Bitdefender Total Security covers up to 10 devices.
Choose Bitdefender if you mainly want solid Mac protection at a low entry price and care about protecting your backups.
Norton 360
Norton 360 is the broadest bundle. Every Norton 360 plan includes antivirus and malware protection, ransomware and hacking protection, Scam Protection (including deepfake detection), a VPN, a password manager, and dark web monitoring. It supports the current and previous two versions of macOS.
The catch for Mac users is that several headline features don't run on a Mac. Norton's own system requirements say Cloud Backup, SafeCam, and Parental Control aren't supported on macOS. Parental Control installs only on a child's Windows PC, iPhone, iPad, or Android device; a parent can manage it from a Mac. So the "50 GB Cloud Backup" in Deluxe is only useful if you also have a Windows PC.
Pricing has the biggest gap between first year and renewal:
- Norton 360 Standard: 1 device, $39.99 the first year, renews at $94.99/year.
- Norton 360 Deluxe: 5 devices, $49.99 the first year, renews at $124.99/year.
Both come with a 60-day money-back guarantee. Norton also sells a cheaper AntiVirus Plus plan and LifeLock identity theft bundles.
Choose Norton if you'll actually use the VPN, password manager, and dark web monitoring, and you set a reminder to review the price before renewal.
Do You Need Mac Antivirus at All?
Many people don't. macOS already includes several layers of protection, described in Apple's platform security guide:
- Gatekeeper checks that downloaded apps come from identified developers and are notarized by Apple.
- XProtect scans apps for known malware signatures, and Apple updates it in the background.
- XProtect Remediator periodically checks for and removes known malware.
If you install apps mainly from the Mac App Store or developers you trust, keep macOS and your browsers updated, and use a password manager, the built-in tools cover the common cases. A paid app makes more sense if you download a lot of software from around the web, share a Mac with family members, run a small business, need to meet a client's security requirements, or want extras like a VPN or outbound firewall in one subscription.
If you're unsure, start with Malwarebytes' free scanner to check your Mac without a subscription.
Which Mac Antivirus Should You Use?
Use Malwarebytes if you want a clean, simple app and one plan that also covers a phone or a Windows PC.
Use Intego ONE if you're all-in on Apple and want an outbound firewall alongside antivirus.
Use Bitdefender if you want the cheapest first year and dedicated protection for your files and Time Machine backups.
Use Norton 360 if you want a VPN, password manager, and identity monitoring bundled together and will check the renewal price.
Use macOS's built-in protection if you install software carefully and don't need the extras.
Final Verdict
Malwarebytes is the easiest recommendation for most Mac users who want an antivirus app. It's light, simple to use, has a free scanner to try first, and its renewal prices are much closer to the first-year price than Norton's.
Intego ONE is the best Mac-only suite, mainly because of its two-way firewall with per-app rules and its focus on macOS.
Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac is the best value for a first year, and the only one here with Time Machine backup protection.
Norton 360 has the most extras, but several of them don't run on a Mac, and renewals cost more than double the first-year price.
My practical recommendation: run Malwarebytes' free scan first. If you decide you want ongoing protection, pick the app whose extras you'll actually use, and add a calendar reminder a month before renewal so you aren't surprised by the full price.
